Additional lines are basically the same as a new phone account entirely. Alternate numbers are attached to lines. You must have a line to add Alternate Numbers to.
Alternate Numbers can be based out of a different city, area code, and even state, for the convenience of relatives or friends. This way, they will not incur long-distance charges when calling you, for they will be calling a number local to their area.
By adding an Additional Line, you then have the capability to be on two different phones holding two separate conversations. This is not the case for alternate numbers.
